About Us
Mission Statement
We strive to deliver high quality, patient centred, accessible care to our community
Mairangi Medical Centre has a long history of providing service to the East Coast Bays community. The practice was first started by Dr Mark Hepburn and Dr Andrew Blair in the 1940s - although it was not then called Mairangi Medical Centre.
Dr Lewis King joined the practice in the early 1970s and in 1975 Dr Graeme Stone joined the practice - and the beginnings of Mairangi Medical Centre as it is today were forged.
The practice was at that stage was operating out of cramped rooms in the Mairangi Bay mall area, but it soon became apparent that with a growing practice new premises were going to be needed. In 1980, the shift was made to purpose-built rooms in Penzance Road, and the practice was able to continue to expand. The practice now has twelve regular doctors. Since 1981 we have also had a GP registrar working with us, as part of our commitment to teaching (and learning).
As Mairangi Medical Centre has such a long association with the community, it has developed into a true "family-oriented" medical centre - serving grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren of the same family. In fact, we consider ourselves a family. Many of our patients and their families have stayed with us for decades, providing a uniquely valuable long term history of their health.
The "Primary Health Care Strategy" was introduced by the government in 2001 establishing Primary Health Organisations (PHOs). The intention was to promote coordinated preventive health care to prevent people from getting more serious illness needing hospital treatment. Mairangi Medical Centre has been part of the ProCare PHO since 1st January 2004. This means the practice can offer more affordable health care to enrolled patients.
PHOs are required to ensure that their practices offer high quality preventive care which focuses on achieving targets for things like immunisation rates, smoking cessation, heart attack risk assessment, and so on.
As governments come and go, Mairangi Medical Centre has endeavoured to keep pace with the latest strategies in order to provide the best health care possible to its patient population. We have a long-term commitment to the community we serve, and we will no doubt still be here after the next major changes to the health systems have occurred.
In 2015 the practice completed a comprehensive external quality assurance audit process known as Cornerstone which provides evidence of compliance with all legal requirements and adherence to best practice standards.
We aim to provide high quality health care to individuals and families in an environment and scale where the family is central. The staff and their patients get to know each other, so that medical care becomes personalised, accessible, supportive, and non-threatening.
Use of technology in health care has been at the “leading edge” at MMC since the early 1980s when the first computers were installed, and continues to underpin the administration and quality assurance activities for the practice. Our patient portal gives access to online appointments, prescription requests, and laboratory results.
Doctors in the practice have held important roles in health policy, administration, and education over many years, including the College of GPs, NZ Medical Association, Waitemata DHB, GP training scheme, and ProCare PHO.
We have a long term commitment to recruitment and teaching of nurses and doctors for general practice so that we can all enjoy high quality health care into the future.
We aim to provide long term high quality health care to individuals and families in a friendly and supportive environment, responding and adapting to the changing needs of our patient population, and to the challenges of the national health care environment.
